Happy State Independence Restoration Day!

Happy State Independence Restoration Day!

Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of Restoration of State Independence. On 18 October 1991, the Supreme Soviet adopted a historic document at its session: the Constitutional Act on State Independence. The Act established that the independent Azerbaijani state is the legal successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed from 1918 to 1920.

On 29 December 1991, the issue was put to a nationwide referendum, in which 95% of the population took part and voted in favour of the country’s independence, sovereignty and freedom. In May 1992, the National Assembly approved the national anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with music by Uzeyir Hajibeyli and lyrics by Ahmad Javad. Shortly afterwards, the tricolour flag and the state emblem, featuring an eight-pointed star with a flame at its centre, were also approved. Since 18 October 1992, the date has been commemorated in Azerbaijan as a national holiday.

Under the Law “On Independence Day”, adopted by the Milli Majlis on 15 October 2021, 28 May was declared Independence Day, while 18 October was designated the Day of Restoration of Independence.
