Roman Hryhorchuk was born on March 22, 1965, in the village of Kornych, Ivano-Frankivsk region of Ukraine. The 59-year-old specialist, who played in 5 countries during his football career, defended the colors of “Prykarpattia” (1988-1994) and “Kryvbas” (1995-1996) in his homeland, “Sankt-Pölten” (1994) in Austria, “Petrochemia” (1995) in Poland, “Saturn” (1996-1997) in Russia and “Dinaburg” (1998-1999) in Latvia.
The specialist, who started his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach and became a head coach in 2000, worked at Latvia’s “Dinaburg” (1998-2005) and “Ventspils” (2005-2009), Ukraine’s “Metalurh” (2009-2010) and “Chornomorets” (2010-2014, until June 2024), Azerbaijan’s “Gabala” (2015-2018), Kazakhstan’s “Astana” (2018-2019) and Belarus’ “Shakhtyor” (2020-2021). During his time at “Ventspils”, the experienced coach led the club to 3 Latvian championship titles (2006, 2007, 2008), 2 Latvian Cups (2005, 2007) and was named Latvia’s best coach (2009). Under his leadership, Odessa’s “Chornomorets” was promoted to the Premier League in the 2010/11 season, and in the 2012/13 season the club reached the final of the Ukrainian Cup, earning the right to participate in the UEFA Europa League and advancing to the group stage of the tournament. Hryhorchuk’s team achieved another success by finishing second in a group featuring Croatia’s “Dinamo” (Zagreb), the Netherlands’ “PSV Eindhoven” and Bulgaria’s “Ludogorets” (Razgrad), qualifying for the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. Hryhorchuk’s 3.5-season spell at “Gabala” can also be considered successful. Under his leadership, the club won bronze and silver medals in the Azerbaijan Premier League, became a finalist of the national cup, and for the first time in its history qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage before repeating the achievement later on. He also defeated “Manchester United” in the Europa League group stage with “Astana”, whom he guided to Kazakhstan Premier League and Super Cup titles. In 2020, he took charge of Belarusian club “Shakhtyor” and in a short time led the club to the national championship and Super Cup titles.
From June to October 2024, he managed “Neftchi”.
