As last year, Neftchi had to represent Azerbaijan in the Commonwealth Cup of CIS champions. 

Head coach Agasalim Mirjavadov, who is preparing for the tournament in Baku, liked Bulgarian Svetoslav Stefanov and included him in the squad. Darko Chordash , Zaur Tagizadeh and Rashad Sadigov, who were expelled from the team instead , could not help us in the tournament.         

Our footballers, who won the first two games in the group, drew with Aktobe and reached the quarterfinals as the group winners. Here the struggle with Pakhtakor was difficult. Despite the efforts of the parties, the account was not opened in the main time. According to the rules of the tournament, penalty kicks were taken immediately after the main time. Although our players were accurate in this series, the shot of two Uzbek players was blocked by Micovic, who held the tournament at a high level . There was no need for a shot by the goalkeeper, who had to take the last penalty.      

In the semifinal, Neftchi had to play against Punik, which they defeated last year . But it turned out that the Armenians left Moscow a day before the semifinals. Fearing to meet our footballers, the Armenians left the hotel at night and fled to Yerevan. Therefore, "Neftchi" reached the final for the second year in a row. 

Although Kaunas opened the score in a very interesting final match , our players did not lose themselves. Our team, promoted with the support of more than 6,000 of our compatriots , won the "Unity Cup" for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani football as a result of a wonderful game .   

Fans lined up from the airport to the city in Baku greeted our footballers as heroes. Receiving the members of the team, President Ilham Aliyev thanked them for the victory and thanked them for keeping their promise to win the trophy a year ago.
