Neftchi, which finished the last USSR championship in the first group with pessimistic notes, was diligently preparing for the new season. Head coach Ahmad Alasgarov literally wanted to restore the team to its former glory. However, the political events in the country affected all spheres of life, as well as football.  

After the 1991 season, Ukraine announced that it would hold its own championship, along with the Baltic countries and Georgia. After a while, the political processes that resulted in the collapse of the USSR ended with the establishment of an organization called the CIS. Vyacheslav Koloskov, who heads the union's football kitchen, came up with the idea of ​​holding a CIS championship. The political leadership of our republic at that timeHowever, despite the tragedy of January 20, and the fact that we were forcibly dragged into the war by the center, he did not leave the waiting position. Unfortunately, the leaders of the football industry had the same mentality. Central Asia, Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to hold this championship. The unfortunate situation was that the management agreed to allow Neftchi to compete in the same tournament with the Armenian teams. However, at that time, our brave sons were fighting Armenian bullets in the battles for Karabakh.

The tournament organizers added Neftchi to the group of strongmen. The draw had already been made and the calendar had been captured. In this situation, "Spartak" refused to play. The head coach of the team Oleg Romantsev explained the reason for this with new economic relations, saying that the additional costs for Spartak to go to Baku, Dushanbe and Tashkent are insignificant. After that, other Moscow clubs joined Spartak. This statement was tantamount to expelling the teams of the CIS republics from the championship. After the position of the Moscow clubs became clear, Koloskov and his entourage were forced to withdraw their claims.

Only then did the leaders of our football understand the importance of holding an independent championship. AFFA was established in a short time , it was decided to hold the first independent national championship .    

The collapse of the Soviet Union "Neftchi" in a bank account in Moscow, close to 2 million rubles , Igor Ponomarev Sweden from the sale of $ 1600 from the fund for the war gave him the team after transferring to our country.     

Neftchi, which was preparing for the Union-wide competitions, had to play in the Republican Championship. This fact did not go unnoticed in the psychology of the players. Some players did not reconcile with this situation and chose to leave the team. However, "Neftchi" managed to protect the core of the team.  

26 teams were allowed to the first championship . The teams were divided into two semi-groups. In the first stage, they had to determine the first six. In the second stage, the winners of the medals had to be determined. However, Neftchi could not participate in the competition from the first round. The reason was that the opponent of the first round, Baku Inshaatchi , was visiting Iran. The team joined the championship only from the 3rd round. Neftchi hosted Khazar in the first match of independence. The opponent was very strong, as several former players of our team also played for Sumgayit. The game was marked by tension. The Baku team won with a penalty kick by Yunis Huseynov just 3 minutes before the end .      

An interesting point is that after this match, Neftchi player Novruz Azimov voluntarily went to the front. Ahead of the events , we can note that after Neftchi became the champion, AFFA decided to award a gold medal to Novruz Azimov , despite the fact that he played one game .     

After that, for 12 games in a row, Baku did not know what defeat was. Neftchi, which had no doubt of its greatness in the provinces, was astonishing as a super team. Clubs that had dominated the domestic championship for many years during the USSR now had to play against the number one team of the Republic. Neftchi's fame oppressed those teams psychologically. "Neftchi" was able to ensure the integrity of the goal in 9 consecutive games.

Our team's winning streak lasted up to 15 rounds. "Khazar", which was distinguished by its claim in the championship, came to the game with the flagship as if it was the last fight. Convinced of the victories, Neftchi suffered its first and only major defeat in the national championship in Sumgayit. Yunis Huseynov's series was also broken in this game. The captain's record was broken in this match, which disappointed the rival goalkeepers in 12 consecutive games. Our team did not suffer defeat until the end of the first stage. In the second stage, Neftchi's advantage was obvious, as the previous points were taken into account. Perhaps, as a result of this advantage, our players, who performed their duties from the beginning, passed the final stage a little weakly. Despite the failures in Ganja and "Karabakh" and "home", our team officially won its first championship on October 24 at the Republic Stadium . The leader, who faced Turan that day, won his first gold medal. Although the visitors opened the scoring , Samir Alakbarov scored the golden goal in the 42nd minute . He was also the author of Neftchi 's 100th goal in the national championship . At the end of the season, Samir Alakbarov was named the strongest player of the first independent championship of Azerbaijan .                

The team, which was already celebrating the victory to the sound of "Neftchi - champion", had to have unpleasant moments in the game with "Kapaz" . Since the winners of all the medals were known, this game in the last round was no longer important. But Ganja residents thought differently. The referee had to cancel the match because they played very rough . According to the decision of AFFA, the game was repeated . "Neftchi" proved that it was not a champion in vain by beating "Kapaz" in the second match.
